Case Study: Enhancing Drone GPS Signal Reception

Case Study: Enhancing Drone GPS Signal Reception

Issues and Challenges

Drones frequently encounter sudden losses of GPS signal during flight, leading to operational disruptions and potential loss of the drone. This issue can be attributed to various factors, including interference, antenna performance, and suboptimal mounting locations.

Action Taken

Yokowo’s Technology Center undertook a comprehensive series of benchmarking tests on drones experiencing signal loss. These tests included:

  • Signal Reception Measurements: Detailed analysis of the signal strength and quality received by the drone’s GPS system under various conditions.
  • GPS Antenna Receptivity Testing: Evaluation of the GPS antennas’ ability to receive signals when mounted on the drone. This involved testing different antenna models and configurations to identify performance discrepancies.

Technical Details

  • Interference Analysis: Yokowo conducted tests to identify sources of electromagnetic interference (EMI) that could affect GPS signal reception. This included both external sources (e.g., other electronic devices) and internal sources (e.g., drone’s own electronics).
  • Antenna Performance Issues: The tests revealed that certain antennas had poor performance due to design flaws or material limitations. These issues were particularly evident in environments with high levels of multipath interference, where signals reflect off surfaces and create multiple signal paths.
  • Mounting Location Optimization: The position of the GPS antenna on the drone was found to significantly impact signal reception. Antennas mounted too close to other electronic components or in positions with obstructed views of the sky experienced degraded performance.

Results

Yokowo identified specific performance issues with the antennas and problems related to their mounting locations. By providing recommendations for optimal performance, including the use of higher-quality antennas and strategic mounting positions, they significantly improved signal reception. This led to more reliable GPS connectivity, reducing operational disruptions and the risk of drone loss.
